MONDAY 2nd MAY 2016

Oving - 0

Long Marston - 5

Following the cancellation of the Easter Monday fixture, the final eventually took place on Saturday 7th May at the Oving Recreation Ground. The weather was completely different to Easter Monday, no rain and the first hot day of summer welcomed the players and officials of both teams. In front of a good crowd, Oving were making their first appearence in the final since the 1981/82 season.

This year the game kicked off at 3 o'clock and it was Long Marston that started the stronger keeping Oving pinned back into their half. So despite the pressure it was a long ball over the top that lead to Long Marston's opening goal. The Long Marston beating the Oving defenders and goalkeeper to the ball to toe end it in to the goal. Fifteen minutes later came a turning point in the game, in a rare attack an Oving forward crossed the ball from the left, the ball was missed by two Long Marston defenders and arrived at Oving's main man, eight yards out. Rather than taking a touch and putting the ball wherever he wanted, he took it first time and ballooned it wide. This was to prove costly as from the goalkick Long Marston attacked down the left and this time when the ball was put over, it was dispatched in to the goal. Two nil Long Marston at half time.

In to the second half and it was Long Marston who struck early to put the game beyond Oving, who continued to fight but could not break down the Long Marston defence. After hitting the woodwork on two occasions Long Marston hit Oving on the break towards the end to run out 5 nil winners.

The Oving Village Cup was presented to Long Marston by Mr Jim Styles. Thanks to the officials, Paul Jenkins, Bernie Goodman and Dave Commander who made sure nothing got out of hand.

Lastly, a word of thanks to the Oving Village Cup committee and all the supporters, who once again turned out on the re-arranged date of 7th May to support the competition.
